The New Airport

The new airport, also known as Kastelli Airport or Crete Airport, is set to replace the existing Heraklion Airport (Nikos Kazantzakis). It is being constructed near the town of Kastelli in northwest Crete and represents a significant infrastructure project for the region.

The primary goal of the project is to increase the island’s air traffic capacity to meet the growing demand for tourism. The airport is designed to incorporate state-of-the-art technology and facilities to provide passengers with a pleasant experience while minimizing environmental impact.

Construction originally began around 2017, with the airport expected to be completed by 2025. The construction costs are estimated at approximately €522 million.
