10:00 AM: Arrival at Knossos Palace

Knossos Palace is the largest archaeological site in Crete and one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe. This ancient palace city, a cornerstone of Cretan culture and wine history, was built around 2000 BC and is a brilliant example of Minoan architecture and art. The entrance fee is €15 for adults, and the opening hours are usually from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, though they may vary depending on the season.

12:00 PM: Arrival in Archanes

Archanes is a charming Cretan village known for its traditional architecture, narrow streets, and picturesque squares. Located about 14 kilometers south of Heraklion, it’s also renowned for its wine region, embodying the essence of Cretan culture and wine. The village is perched on a hill, offering beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards and olive groves. Archanes has a rich history and has been inhabited since at least the 5th millennium BC. There are many historical sites and attractions to explore, such as the Archaeological Museum of Archanes. You’ll also find numerous taverns and cafés where you can take a break and enjoy local Cretan food and wine.

We’d be happy to recommend some wineries in the Archanes region along with possible tour times:

  1. Domaine Paterianakis: A family-run winery specializing in organic wines. The tour includes wine tasting and a guided tour of the cellars. Tours are available daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
  2. Lyarakis Winery: One of Crete’s oldest wineries, producing award-winning wines. The tour includes wine tasting and a guided tour of the cellars, available daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
  3. Lyrarakis Estate: Another family-run winery in Archanes that produces organic wines. The tour includes wine tasting and a guided tour of the cellars, available daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
  4. Ktima Tamiolaki: This winery produces wines from indigenous grape varieties and offers a tour of the cellars and wine tasting. Tours are available Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

1:30 PM: Lunch Break

Archanes has many traditional taverns and restaurants offering Cretan cuisine and wine. The village is famous for its wines, especially the red wine “Kotsifali” and the white wine “Vilana,” integral parts of Cretan culture and wine heritage.

3:00 PM: Arrival at the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum

The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum is located in Myrtia, near Heraklion, and is dedicated to the life and work of the famous Cretan writer Nikos Kazantzakis. The museum highlights the influence of Cretan culture and wine in Kazantzakis’s works. The entrance fee is €7 for adults, and the opening hours vary depending on the season.

5:00 PM: Arrival in Heraklion

Heraklion is the capital of Crete and the largest city on the island. There are many attractions to visit, such as the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, the Koules Fortress, the Morosini Fountain, and the famous Venetian harbor. Most attractions have entrance fees, and opening hours vary by season. Heraklion serves as a perfect hub to experience the best of Cretan culture and wine.

9:00 PM: Return to Hersonisos
